Computer Superhero

The William P. Faust Public Library of Westland offers a variety of computer classes covering diverse computer topics and suited to different skill levels. Read the descriptions below to find out what classes would be useful to you.

Check out our events page or enquire at the reference desk to find out the days and times these classes are held. Sign up is required for all classes. Seating is limited. Classes can be taken more than once, but only two of the same class can be taken consecutively in order to ensure that we have space for new students.

Classes offered every month:

Computer Basics (2x a month)

This class is for people with no computer experience. Learn computer terminology, how to properly turn a computer on and off, finding programs and using the mouse.

Internet 101 (2x a month)

This course is designed to be a very basic introduction to the Internet, and the software used to negotiate the Internet, specifically Internet Explorer. Students should leave this course with the ability to log onto the Internet, get to specific websites, and negotiate inside and across websites. Prerequisite: Computer Basics or some previous computer experience. This class is now an hour and a half.

Introduction to Microsoft Word

Learn the basics of word processing including creating and saving documents, formatting texts, and printing. Prerequisite: Computers Basics or some previous computer experience. Some keyboarding skills are required.

Excel for the Beginner

This class serves as an introduction to Microsoft Excel for the very beginner. You will learn how to format cells, create lists, and alter the text in the cells. Basic computer knowledge is necessary to take this class, and familiarity with Microsoft Word is preferred. You may bring a flash drive to save your work, but it is not required.

PowerPoint for the Beginner

An introduction to Microsoft PowerPoint for the very beginner. Learn how to make presentations using PowerPoint, focusing on inserting and formatting text and pictures. Basic computer knowledge is necessary to take this class, and familiarity with Microsoft Word is preferred. You may bring a flash drive to save your work, but it is not required.

Internet 201

This class builds on skills developed in the Internet 101 class. You will learn ways to improve and refine your search results using advanced search features. We will look at both Yahoo! and Google in our search efforts as well as learn about other search engines. Prerequisite: Internet 101 or some previous internet experience. This class is now an hour and a half.

File Management

This class is for intermediate computer users who want to learn the structure of the computer, how to manage the desktop, the difference between save and save as, using a flash drive, how to create files and folders and how to manage them. Prerequisite: Internet 101 and Introduction to Microsoft Word or previous experience with the Internet and Microsoft applications.

Intermediate Microsoft Word

Learn more advanced word processing skills including how to use graphic elements, bulleting and numbering lists, cut/copy/paste functions, and headers and footers. Prerequisite: Introduction to Word

Publisher for the Beginner

This class serves as an introduction to Publisher for the very beginner. You will learn about the different publication types and how to use templates to make a flyer. Basic computer knowledge is necessary to take this class, and familiarity with Microsoft Word is preferred. You may bring a flash drive to save your work, but it is not required.
