Flora & Ulysses
Kate DiCamillo
3rd to 7th Grade

Your "illuminated adventures" will begin when you turn the pages of this Newbery Award winner.  Flora and Ulysses are remarkable in their observations and words.  Thank goodness, or you might not know a hero from an arch-nemesis.  Flora's encounter with a squirrel is hardly ordinary.  He flies, writes poetry and types.  She has a rough time getting people to believe in his exceptional gifts, obvious though they are.  This strong and heart-tugging story will stay with you for all the right reasons.  It is about resiliency, trust, loyality and hope.  And, more than that, it is about finding a super-hero in a humble form.

This is the heartwarming story of a gorilla in a roadside zoo. Ivan, the title character, spends his days in his "domain" creating art, sleeping, talking with his friend, Bob the dog, and acting like a gorilla for the paying tourists. See how they change minds for the better as they search for a place to call home. See Christina Applegate's website for more info about this and other books she's written.

Little Red Writing
Joan Holub
4-10 yrs.

This clever twist on a favorite folk tale takes a brave red pencil on a writing adventure.  Obstacles like run-on sentences lead to nowhere, but a truck full of adverbs helps Little Red get back on her story path.  Engaging illustrations complement the story line and will enhance repeated readings.  Younger ones who are familiar with Little Red Riding Hood will delight in comparing this to the original.  Older readers will be drawn in by the playful puns and teachers can use this as an introduction to a writing exercise.

No Easy Way
Fred Bowen
Age 8 and up

Ted Williams shines as one of the greatest batters in major-league baseball because of his determination and strength of character.  Loving baseball as a boy, he spent countless hours developing the skill he most desired - hitting.  He didn't seem to mind the physical strain that true athletes know.  After striving throughout his school years and as a minor-league player, he lands a position with the Boston Red Sox and wins recognition for batting .400 for an entire season in 1941.

Charles S.Pyle's detailed illustrations beautifully depict bygone days of a legendary season for a remarkable man, whose exceptional skill was hard-won and valiantly earned.

Fortunately, The Milk
Neil Gaman
Grade 2 and up

This short book by the prolific Gaiman and illustrated by Skottie Young is the tall tale of a dad who gets lost on his way back from buying milk for his kids’ cereal. Dad finds himself carried by the great Professor Steg (a stegosaurus, if you must know) in his Floaty-Ball-Person-Carrier (a balloon) on adventures through space and time. They go face to face with nasty pirates, angry natives, and green space blobs, in their attempt to manage the time-space continuum and get  dad and his bottle of milk back home. Lots of adventure, hijinx, and wordplay in this quick-paced book. Enjoyable as a read-aloud or a solo adventure!
