Seeking Teen Volunteers for the Summer

Will you be entering 9th grade or above in the fall? Do you like kids and reading? The Children’s Department is currently seeking teen volunteers to help for our Summer Reading Program, Dream Big, READ. Interested volunteers are asked to commit to two or more hours per week doing a variety of tasks. This is a great opportunity to earn service hours for your school or community organization while you have free time during the summer! Applications are available in the library or online here; please check out the application for more information and return completed applications to the Children’s Desk.

Next week (April 21-28) is Money Smart Week, so the library is holding programs about managing your money. On Saturday, April 28th at 1pm, teens can make their very own, one-of-a-kind duct tape wallet. The library will provide colored duct tape. If you come to make a duct tape wallet, stay for the "Building Great Credit for Teens" program provided by Jenny Hale of the Wayne-Westland Credit Union. Celebrate National Poetry Month!

National Poetry Month is upon us and we have several ways for you to celebrate! If you like to listen to poetry and poetry set to music, we have our April 12 Open Mic and a special April 26 Poetry of the Blues and Music & Metaphor program put on by the Sheila Landis Trio. Also, check out our Poetry Month display by our Circulation Desk for more local poetry month selections.

For the poets out there, we have three great programs: our Westland Writes ... poetry and short story book; our Ekphrasis poetry contest; and our April 19 Teen Poetry Slam.

Submissions for the Westland Writes and Ekphrasis  programs must be received by Saturday,  April 28 at 5 p.m. (at either the Poetry Month display or emailed to andy.schuck@westlandlibrary.org). Teens interested in the Poetry Slam should sign up by Tuesday, April 17th.
