All students at Hailsham meet a grim fate: Once they reach a certain age, they must donate their vital organs to those in need. In essence, they are harvested. Never Let Me Go is the story of three Hailsham students- Ruth, Tommy, and Kathy. Narrated by Kathy, the novel takes us through their childhood and eventual release from Hailsham (to lead normal lives until their donations begin).
Ishiguro doesn't hit you over the head with his anti-cloning, fear for the future theme; rather, he presents you with Kath's haunting story and lets you feel how you feel. I really enjoyed reading this novel and felt invested in what happened to its characters.
If you enjoy Never Let Me Go, be sure to check out the movie! The book was recently made into a film starring Carey Mulligan as Kathy and Keira Knightly as Ruth.
