Great things are happening at your Westland Library—thanks to you!

Last August the residents of Westland passed a millage to secure the library’s operating expenses. Your support has enabled us to move forward on a long-awaited renovation and expansion project. As we work towards making your library a better, more purposeful place to be, our comprehensive renovation and expansion plan will bring new spaces including a new dedicated program room for Youth, state of the art meeting rooms, additional study rooms, an expanded Teen Area, and an outside courtyard. We’re also making improvements throughout the building, including acoustics.

The library has relocated operations during construction to shorten the duration of the project.

Anticipated project timeline

The construction project broke ground on October 21, 2022 and is currently anticipated to be completed in fall 2023.

Temporary relocation

We have moved library operations to the former Marshall Upper Elementary building during the project. Marshall is located at 35100 Bayview Street in Westland. We will return to our renovated building upon completion of the project in fall 2023.

Service changes

Services have resumed at Marshall School, including item holds, interlibrary loan, and other services that were paused during our relocation. Come visit us!

The following services are unavailable at Marshall School and will resume when return to the renovated library building in the fall:

  • Study room bookings
  • After-hours hold pickups

We are no longer accepting book donations. For a list of other local book donation sites, visit our Gifts & Donations page. Please do not place donations in outside book drops.

Construction project FAQ

Where is the money for this project coming from?

In 2016, the Westland Library embarked on a project to expand and update the library and we will be using money from that project as well as money we saved during the pandemic to fund this project.

We voted for an operating millage last summer. Will funds from that be used for this project?

No. That millage was strictly for operating funds. All of the funds for this project come from pandemic savings and the 2016 project.

Will the library close during renovation?

Yes, temporarily. The library closed from late November 2022 to January 2023 while we relocated library operations to the site of the former Marshall School, and we are now open at Marshall. Services will pause again while we move back to our renovated building.

Can I use other libraries during the temporary closure?

You may use your Westland library card to check out materials at any nearby library—bring your library card and ID to your first visit! For more information, see our guide to Finding Services at Neighboring Libraries.

How long will this project take?

This project began in October 2022 and is currently anticipated to be completed in fall of 2023.

What companies will be handling the construction project?

Our construction manager is the Dailey Company. Architecture and design are provided by TMP Architecture and Library Design Associates. The project is managed by Plante Moran Cresa.
