To better serve our patrons, the William P. Faust Public Library of Westland will be moving to a new online catalog system in June 2013. To help prepare for this transition, the library and its patrons will be unable to access MeLCat for interlibrary loan from March 11, 2013 until the beginning of July 2013. No MelCat renewals will be honored during this time.
The Library will be closed Saturday, May 25 - Monday, May 27 for the Memorial Day Weekend. We will re-open at 9 am on Tuesday, May 28. We wish everyone a safe and happy holiday.
The Westland Public Library is sorry to announce the cancellation of the Summer Concert Series for the 2013 season while the Westland Veterans Association constructs the Veterans Memorial in the space currently occupied by the library pavilion. The future venue of the Summer Concert Series has yet to be determined. Look for more information on future summer concerts on the city of Westland website (cityofwestland.com) in the spring of 2014. In the meantime, check out neighboring communities for free summer concerts including Livonia, Plymouth, and Canton.
Please join us at the Library this Sunday, May 19th at 1:00pm for the Tablets for Your Kids program. In this technology session for parents, grandparents, and caregivers, our tablet expert will teach you how to keep kids safe while maximizing their fun and learning using a tablet computer. No sign up is necessary; check out the event page for more information.
The Westland Public Library is proud to announce that we received almost 1100 food items during our Food for Fines program, resulting in almost 900 meals for people in need (the most among the 48 libraries participating in this April event). The library thanks Gleaners Community Food Bank, and its collecting partners, Biggby Coffee, and the Westland Friendship Center. Thank you for helping us help so many in need!

Hey teens, we're looking for some enthusiastic and reliable volunteers to help in the Youth Services Department this summer. Fill out an application, return it to the Youth Services Desk and come to one of our training sessions! You must be in 9th Grade or older in the 2013-2014 school year.
Training Sessions: 7-8:30pm on Thursday, May 23, Wednesday, May 29, or Thursday, June 6. No need to sign up for training, but applications should be turned in to the Youth Services Desk before your chosen training date.
The Westland Public Library is proud to host the NASA-sponsored Here. There. Everywhere. exhibit (http://hte.si.edu) in its Faust (fireplace) Area during the month of May. The exhibit includes 22 different banners, video footage, and an interactive display table showing how the laws of physics apply in our world, in our universe, and, as far as we know, everywhere. The exhibit is available for viewing during regular library hours. Please see the Events pages in our Children's, Teen, and Adult Departments for upcoming programs celebrating the exhibit. We also are happy to say that we shredded over 7000 pounds of paper at our Community Shred today. Thanks to General Shredding for all their help.
Money Smart Week starts on Saturday, April 20th with a range of programs designed to help you better manage your personal finances. Saturday is our Kick-off date and we'll offer something for every age group, including a Budgeting for Kids, Dollar Bill Origami and Smart Money for Teens, and a Community Shred for adults. Check our Events pages (teen and childrens are separate) for more information on these events.
